ESL Teacher prepares a card or sheet contains lists of vocabulary that must be memorized and used in daily life context.

There are thousands of ways that have been undertaken by the linguists, teachers, academicians, and foreign language learners themselves to find the right formula, concept, or way so that the second or foreign language learners can enrich their vocabulary. As many ways, sometimes they fit the formula and sometimes they feel uncomfortable with another formula. It means that it depends on them whether they want to use this formula or another or the best way how they enrich their vocabulary well. As we know that vocabulary has the important role in mastering second or foreign language especially English. On this occasion, the writer shares how we make our students master and comprehend vocabulary they need. ooo …ooo…ooo…ooo…ooo…ooo…ooo 2x

***
This song, one of phenomenon dangdut koplo genre, is very popular song today in Indonesia.. I am sure that all Indonesian know it well. All levels of Indonesian like this so much. It is familiar to us as radio station and TV station always play it for audience. This song is actually a football supporter song. What a nice song to listen and sing!.

The Origin of Iwak Peyek Song

Before I present my paper, I'd like to tell about the origin of this song. The origin rhythm or notation of iwak peyek song is created by H. Imron, a musician who comes from Surabaya, East Java. Because He loves PERSEBYA FC so much, He creates a song to support football players of Persebaya when they play a football match. A Football reporter who works at Malang city said that this song always appears at stadiums at East Java when An East Java Football Club plays the game at its home base. The supporters motivate the football players by singing together the whole time. Those supporters are recognized as BONEK (Bondho Nekad), PERSEBAYA SURABAYA FC supporters. They support their football club by singing it colossally.

So, here in my paper, I want to give my experience in teaching English as second language by using this song. I motivate my students by singing together this song. Not the real song but first I must change the lyrics into English, my own lyrics. I always sing this song together with my students before the lesson begun. The following is an explanation about it.

As stated in the opening of this paper, I choose “Iwak Peyek” song. Now I rewrite the lyrics into English. Look at the following explanation!

First lyrics:

iwak peyek (iwak peyek) iwak peyek (iwak peyek)
iwak peyek sego tiwul (sego tiwul)
sampek elek (sampek elek) sampek tuwek (sampek tuwek)
sampek matek sagita mentul (pancen mentul)

then I change them into...

"hey my friends (hey my friends), hey my friends (hey my friends)
Let’s practice our English (Our English)
Listening English (Listening English), Speaking English (Speaking English)
Reading English, Writing English (Writing English)"

Second lyrics:

iwak peyek (iwak peyek) iwak peyek (iwak peyek)
iwak peyek sego tiwul (sego tiwul)
sampek elek (sampek elek) sampek tuwek (sampek tuwek)
sampek matek sagita mentul (pancen mentul)

then I change them into...

"Never be shy (never be shy), never be shy (never be shy)
Never be shy to speak English (to speak English)
Don’t be afraid (don’t be afraid) Don’t be afraid (don’t be afraid)
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes"

***

This song I use to motivate my students. By singing this song together with all my students, they will never be afraid again to study English especially speaking. I hope the Indonesian English teachers follow my way. The following is further information how we apply it in our classroom (Level: SMP/ MTs – SMA/ MA – University/ College)

Activities/ Procedure:

Before the lesson is started, the teacher asks one of student to come forward to be the leader to sing together.

Then, that boy/ girl says” Now, stand up please! Before we start our lesson let’s sing together. One, two, three, four ….

Here is this song:

ooo …ooo…ooo…ooo…ooo…ooo…ooo 2x

hey my friends (hey my friends), hey my friends (hey my friends)
Let’s practice our English (Our English)
Listening English (Listening English), Speaking English (Speaking English)
Reading English, Writing English (Writing English)

Never be shy (never be shy), never be shy (never be shy)
Never be shy to speak English (to speak English)
Don’t be afraid (don’t be afraid) Don’t be afraid (don’t be afraid)
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes

ooo …ooo…ooo…ooo…ooo…ooo…ooo 2x

(This song is repeated twice).

Notes:
 In the first meeting of odd or even semester, the teacher should give this song to the students in order that they know and sing this song well.

 This activity can be done for the whole semester or if we know that our students look boring, unmotivated or tired, we can ask them to sing this song. That’s the simple way!

 It’s better if we raise both our hands and move it to the right and left of our head, or we clap our hands or your student sing it by playing music instrument, guitar.

Designing Reading Portfolio of Procedure Text for X Grade (MA/ SMA Kelas X)

By Amik Amri Rahmadhi, M.Pd

Procedure text is a text which discusses about the set of steps. They should be completed in the right sequence in order to get the goal. In our daily life, we often have to perform some steps in order to make something or get it done. As we all know, it is good to know the way how to make something better and getting something done. Take for example if we want to make a cup of coffee. We have to follow the procedure in order to make it better. Otherwise, we feel something wrong with the coffee. The main discussion of procedure texts is merely how to make it and how to use it.

As one of material that is taught in senior high school grade, procedure text is discussed and presented by students. In listening, they will hear spoken monolog texts about the way how to make something, how to use something or how is something done. In speaking, they tell about how to make something or get something done individually in front of their friends in the class. In reading, they read a procedure text. In writing, they write their own procedure text.

The main discussion in this short article is only about reading of procedure text. It is especially about reading activity, assignment and reading portfolio. Here, the writer tries to develop student’s ability in reading by doing an extensive reading. In this activity, they are given an assignment to comprehend and master a procedure text. The assignment is to find out an example of procedure text from any sources. Then they answer some questions given based on the text they have read.

As stated in the previous paragraph, it focuses on reading of procedure text. The writer designs an assignment of reading activity of procedure. There are three main purposes of doing this assignment. First, to habituate students in reading English texts, Second, to drill their reading skill and comprehension so that they become better in solving reading problems, and third, to develop their experience how to make something or to get something done.

Based on the above explanation, here the writer explains how to implement this assignment, reading portfolio of procedure. This short article is written to share about an experience of teaching reading of procedure text.

How to do the assignment
1. Ask students to find out an example of procedure text. They may find it in a box of a product (medicine, electronics, household etc), in the pack of food product (noodle, supplement, drinking etc), or even in internet.

2. Ask them to enclose it if it is real and print or write it if they find it from internet or handbook.

3. Give them reading portfolio of procedure sheet. (You may DOWNLOAD it here).

4. Ask them to answer all problems themselves given by a teacher for a week.

5. Ask them to submit their works in the next week. They should enclose the source of reading text they choose.

How to assess it/ Assessment

After submitting this assignment, a teacher should assess it. If there is mistake or unanswered problem, teacher should cross the number of that problems that shows wrong answer or unanswered question. Then, a teacher should note students who had done it or not.

Weaknesses

To assess students’ works, in this case, needs much time because of three reasons. First, teacher doesn’t have the real answer of problems given to students. So, teacher should know whether students had answered all problems or not. Second, teacher must check every student’s work. He/ she should examine one by one of those submitted paper. Third, teacher should give comments to students’ work. There is no real point students have but they will get some notes from their teacher such as excellent, good, fair, keep reading, your absorption in reading is very good and bad etc.

Other activity

After doing this activity, a teacher may ask them to present individually in front of the class. It relates with speaking assessment. Questions for Our students are 1. What is the topic of your procedure text? 2. where do find your procedure text? 3. How many steps to do in your procedure text? 4. Can you make/ use it? What do you think about it? Is it easy of difficult to do? 5. Can your mother/ father make it? Tell me about the steps!

Motivating Our Students through a Popular Indonesian Song “Kau Pemilik Hatiku”

Written by Amik Amri Rahmadhi, M.Pd

“Kau terindah kan selalu terindah
Aku bisa apa 'tuk memilikimu
Kau terindah 'kan selalu terindah
Harus bagaimana ku mengungkapkannya
Kau pemilik hatiku” (Armada Band)

Singing is an enjoyable and nice activity. We may sing a song in order to eliminate our boredom and sometimes to motivate us. In relation with English lesson, we sometimes use a song as media. But in this case, it is not used as a media but we use it to release our student’s bad feeling and motivate them during English lesson.

This short paper describes about a popular Indonesian pop song which are modified for English language learning. It is not used for explaining English lesson but purely for motivating our students when their concentration is broken. As teacher, we often find When the lesson goes, our students feel so tired, hungry and unmotivated sometimes. So, we may invite them to sing a song together. The selected song I recommend is a popular song in Indonesia today. It is “Kau Pemilik Hatiku” which is sung by Armada Band.

This song is very popular song in Indonesia. Armada Band sings it very well. I am sure that Indonesian know it well, both children and adult. So, here in my paper, I want to give my own experience in teaching English as second language by using this song. I motivate my students by singing together this song. Not the real song but first I must change the lyrics into English, my own lyrics. I always sing this song together with my students before the lesson begun or even they feel unmotivated during English lesson. The following is an explanation about it.

As stated in the opening of this paper, I choose “Kau Pemilik Hatiku” song to discuss. Now I write my own lyrics into English. Look at the following explanation!

The first real lyrics are …

“Lihat ku disini
Kau buat ku menangis
Tak ingin menyerah
Tapi tak menyerah
Mencoba lupakan
Tapi ku bertahan”

Then I match my own lyric with the rhythm of this song. Here it is:

“Oh my friends, Let you know
Do you know and let you know
Everything will be right
Because you do the right
You make your parents proud
And make all people proud”

The second real lyrics (reff) are …

“Kau terindah kan selalu terindah
Aku bisa apa 'tuk memilikimu
Kau terindah 'kan selalu terindah
Harus bagaimana ku mengungkapkannya
Kau pemilik hatiku”

Then I match my own lyric with the rhythm of this song. Here it is:

“You, all my friends, everything will be fine
Because you are so fine, everything will be fine
You, all my friends, everything will be nice
Because you are so nice, everything will be nice
Everything will be, be nice”

The last real lyrics are …

“Mungkin lewat mimpi
Ku bisa 'tuk memberi
Ku ingin bahagia
Tapi tak bahagia
Ku ingin dicinta
Tapi tak dicinta”

Then I match my own lyric with the rhythm of this song. Here it is:

“Someday you’ll understand
Today let’s be all best friends
This nice world will be fine
Everything will be fine
All people feel so fine
Because you are so fine”

This song I use to motivate my students and refresh their condition, emotion in following English class. By singing this song together with all students, they will be happy and fresh. They will be motivated and never be afraid again to study English especially speaking. I hope the Indonesian English teachers follow my way.. We may use this song for junior and senior high school students, college or university students. (Level: SMP/ MTs – SMA/ MA – University/ College). The following is further information how we apply it in our classroom

Activities/ Procedure:

Before English lesson is begun, the teacher asks one of student to come forward to be the leader to sing together. In other occasion, if teacher feels uncomfortable to teach because of unmotivated students, he or she may invite all students to sing this song together.

Then, that boy/ girl says” Now, stand up please! Before we start our lesson let’s sing together. One, two, three, four …., or Well, My students let’s sing a song together. One, two, three, four …

Here is this song:

"Oh my friends, Let you know
Do you know and let you know
Everything will be right
Because you do the right
You make your parents proud
And make all people proud"

Reff:

"You, all my friends, everything will be fine
Because you are so fine, everything will be fine
You, all my friends, everything will be nice
Because you are so nice, everything will be nice
Everything will be, be nice"

"Someday you’ll understand
Today let’s be all best friends
This nice world will be fine
Everything will be fine
All people feel so fine
Because you are so fine"

back to Reff .

Notes:
§ In the first meeting of odd or even semester, the teacher should give this song to the students in order that they know and sing this song well.

§ This activity can be done for the whole semester or if we know that our students look boring, unmotivated or tired, we can ask them to sing this song. That’s the simple way!

§ It’s better if we raise both our hands and move it to the right and left of our head, or we clap our hands or your student sing it by playing music instrument, guitar.

Special Notes:

The writer will be very grateful if Armada band sings “Kau Pemilik Hatiku” by using his own English lyrics. It may make Armada Band become popular Band internationally. All people all around the world will recognize it as it sings this song with English lyrics. If it is true, he hopes that he will receive a commission for his lyrics. Introduction
Recount text is one of type of text that should be known by students of X grade in Indonesia. It tells about past events that are told based on the sequence of events. It sometimes tells about one’s experience such as nice, bad, unforgettable, and terrible experience. A biography of someone is also written in the form of recount.

As one of material that is taught in senior high school grade, recount text is discussed and presented by students. Based on the above explanation, here the writer explains how to implement this assignment, reading portfolio of recount. This short article is written to share about an experience of teaching reading of recount text.

How to do the assignment
1. Ask students to find out an example of recount text, in this case is about someone’s biography (especially about famous people who was passed away). They may find it in their own handbook; student’s works sheet (LKS), websites, encyclopedia, journal etc.
2. Ask them to copy it if they find it in handbook and print it if they find it from internet.
3. Give them reading portfolio of recount sheet. (You may download here).
4. Ask them to answer all problems themselves given by a teacher for a week.

All my friends, let’s study
The concept of report text.
Do you know and understand
Let’s memorize its concept

And, to describe, the ways things are
About something people make,
Non living and living things
Natural phenomena,

Reff (the first)

General classification and followed the description
Consists of two components; we call it a report text
#
And we write it, in present tense
The use of general nouns
Behavioral, relating verbs
The use of technical terms
#
Reff (the second)

Reading books, classroom lesson, and TV documentaries
Observation, Research report, and encyclopedias

How do we use it in our classroom?

As teacher, we must prepare the material that will be given to our students. In this case, a concept of report text is written into lyrics of a chosen song. Look the example above..

Procedures:
 Ask the students to discuss about the concept of report Text.
 Explain it clearly to students
 Write down that concept on white board or black board.
 Let’s sing it together
 Ask student to memorize it.
 Ask student to present it individually, in front of the class or teacher.

Assessment:
To know our students whether they understand or not about the concept of report text, they are asked to memorize it then present it individually.
