This song, one of phenomenon dangdut koplo genre, is very popular song today in Indonesia.. I am sure that all Indonesian know it well. All levels of Indonesian like this so much. It is familiar to us as radio station and TV station always play it for audience. This song is actually a football supporter song. What a nice song to listen and sing!.

The Origin of Iwak Peyek Song

Before I present my paper, I'd like to tell about the origin of this song. The origin rhythm or notation of iwak peyek song is created by H. Imron, a musician who comes from Surabaya, East Java. Because He loves PERSEBYA FC so much, He creates a song to support football players of Persebaya when they play a football match. A Football reporter who works at Malang city said that this song always appears at stadiums at East Java when An East Java Football Club plays the game at its home base. The supporters motivate the football players by singing together the whole time. Those supporters are recognized as BONEK (Bondho Nekad), PERSEBAYA SURABAYA FC supporters. They support their football club by singing it colossally.

So, here in my paper, I want to give my experience in teaching English as second language by using this song. I motivate my students by singing together this song. Not the real song but first I must change the lyrics into English, my own lyrics. I always sing this song together with my students before the lesson begun. The following is an explanation about it.

As stated in the opening of this paper, I choose “Iwak Peyek” song. Now I rewrite the lyrics into English. Look at the following explanation!

First lyrics:

iwak peyek (iwak peyek) iwak peyek (iwak peyek)
iwak peyek sego tiwul (sego tiwul)
sampek elek (sampek elek) sampek tuwek (sampek tuwek)
sampek matek sagita mentul (pancen mentul)

then I change them into...

"hey my friends (hey my friends), hey my friends (hey my friends)
Let’s practice our English (Our English)
Listening English (Listening English), Speaking English (Speaking English)
Reading English, Writing English (Writing English)"

Second lyrics:

iwak peyek (iwak peyek) iwak peyek (iwak peyek)
iwak peyek sego tiwul (sego tiwul)
sampek elek (sampek elek) sampek tuwek (sampek tuwek)
sampek matek sagita mentul (pancen mentul)

then I change them into...

"Never be shy (never be shy), never be shy (never be shy)
Never be shy to speak English (to speak English)
Don’t be afraid (don’t be afraid) Don’t be afraid (don’t be afraid)
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes"

***

This song I use to motivate my students. By singing this song together with all my students, they will never be afraid again to study English especially speaking. I hope the Indonesian English teachers follow my way. The following is further information how we apply it in our classroom (Level: SMP/ MTs – SMA/ MA – University/ College)

Activities/ Procedure:

Before the lesson is started, the teacher asks one of student to come forward to be the leader to sing together.

Then, that boy/ girl says” Now, stand up please! Before we start our lesson let’s sing together. One, two, three, four ….

Here is this song:

ooo …ooo…ooo…ooo…ooo…ooo…ooo 2x

hey my friends (hey my friends), hey my friends (hey my friends)
Let’s practice our English (Our English)
Listening English (Listening English), Speaking English (Speaking English)
Reading English, Writing English (Writing English)

Never be shy (never be shy), never be shy (never be shy)
Never be shy to speak English (to speak English)
Don’t be afraid (don’t be afraid) Don’t be afraid (don’t be afraid)
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes

ooo …ooo…ooo…ooo…ooo…ooo…ooo 2x

(This song is repeated twice).

Notes:
 In the first meeting of odd or even semester, the teacher should give this song to the students in order that they know and sing this song well.

 This activity can be done for the whole semester or if we know that our students look boring, unmotivated or tired, we can ask them to sing this song. That’s the simple way!

 It’s better if we raise both our hands and move it to the right and left of our head, or we clap our hands or your student sing it by playing music instrument, guitar.
